When we think of the traffic safety , we usually think of drivers , vehicles & roads .we forget the pedestrians who use the streets for walking . in many conditions we forget those people , unless we practice walking when we assist our children in their way to school . we may enquire if our children are safe when using same roads used by the heavy traffic ?

The tragic fact is that a high incidence of traffic accidents make a high percentage of mortality each year . so it is significant to cooperate together to help each other to provide safety for pedestrians .

In big cities the design of the roads and streets guarantee the safety of both cars and pedestrians . most roads contain specified passeges for walking persons , like the zibbra crossing lines , and pedestrians bridging passeges , traffic Signs , etc, all of which participate in organising the traffic movement and to separate the vehicle movement from the pedestrians .

But unfortuanetly all these procedures do not prevent the high incidence of pedestrians accidents . ther are two important factors affecting the safety of pedestrians , the careful behaviour of the pedestrians and that of the drivers .

If you one of the pedestrians you are responsible to implement the following safety instructions when you cross the road :

• you shall walk on the pavement , or on the far left side of the road facing the coming vehicles . so that you can see the coming vehicles easily , and the drivers can see you easily also. In the evening try to have bright color clothes in order to be easily seen by the drivers .
• cross the road from the specified places of pedestrians , and lok carefully to the traffic movement beforecrossing . It is safely to pass through the specified locations of pedestrians and not to cross the road from any other point , because the drivers pay more attention at the pedestrians passing points .
• keep observation to the traffic light . don't cross unless the light is green . wait at the corner of the pavement when the light is red or when the sign is (pass ) .

Responsibility of the drivers

if you are a driver , you should allow the pedestrians to cross the road safely . Remember that you keep safe inside your metallic vehicle , while the pedestrians have nothing to protect themselves . please to care about the following instructions :

• to implement all the traffic rules and regulations , and to stop at all the stop signs especially the traffic lights and the roads instrcuction signs .
• stop at the zibbra crossing line for pedestrians , and give them the priority . at the crossing roads minimize your speed and take care of the pedestrians especially children and old ages .
• do not exceed the allowed speed , and minnmize your speed in the ares of schools , playing yards , and residential areas .

traffic accidens are still one of the critical issues . cooperation of both drivers and pedestrians may play a role in minimizing the rate of accidents and increase the safety opportunities .
